Yes, it's that time of year again as the sun rounds the Earth. It's been a time of clearing clutter so I can set up my easel to finish off one of my large paintings. And yes, it's my Peggy's Cove one.

I still am a perfectionist and I'm trying to recreate the one I had sold years ago. So, this one needs a bit more green in my eyes.

I've been working on this painting in spurts, and bits of time when I could, or when the mood struck me to paint. An artist's life such as mine has been such a rollercoaster that the waves on the water in this painting aren't high enough to accommodate the feeling! *laughs*

So, while I get back into a groove of sorts I'll leave these words from my idol:

“Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go
out and look for a successfull personality and duplicate it.”

Here's hoping things go smoothly. I expect that there will be hiccups and other issues, so please bear with me.

So, while that is going on I will leave you with this image of one of my other watercolour paintings. It is, as with the previous post's one, a work in progress. I do have images of 3 that were completed and will find them to add to my blog.

Enjoy!

AnimatedLadyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12963067911593988068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6949782048748868878.post-3254733277253327912023-08-19T23:42:00.001-04:002023-08-19T23:42:52.443-04:00A late night for me!

Well, I spent most of the day getting this set up and now I am onto re-adding content.
It's been a while since I've been on here. Life has a habit of interrupting when the best creative moments hit. A typical day sees me trying to fend off RSIs while attempting to finish a painting long overdue to its intended.

Lately I've been vetting a space to exhibit my artwork. Wish me luck in the submission process!

Happy 2015 and may your days be bright and your nights filled with bliss!

I make earrings and other assorted Aboriginal items that have patterned beadwork on them. I use the lazy squaw stitch, peyote and lots of loom work as well to create some neat items to use in everyday life.

(I'm sorry. I am having issues with uploading photos, so please bear with me while I sort this out :( )

It is a gloomy cloudy day here. It makes for a good creative day. :D Now all I need are white walls and I'll be set!

Hope your day is going just as well!AnimatedLadyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12963067911593988068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6949782048748868878.post-31654855343610930002014-05-02T10:08:00.003-04:002023-08-25T15:25:21.729-04:00Commissioned WorkSince my last post I have been working odd jobs and various contracts. I recently wrote an article which I am copying here:

Striking your Fancy: The Aboriginal Ceremonial Shawl

Recently I took on the project to sew up a ceremonial shawl for a friend and I am going to walk you through the process.

This shawl was made to celebrate the passing of a daughter of the Earth. I only met her a couple of times, and on each occasion the joy, wonder and vibrancy of life could be felt radiating outward from her.

My friend, who was closest to her, spent a long time finding the materials that would make up this wonderful shawl. The colors represent her spirit and soul, the fabric and ribbons made wonderful swishing sounds of her footsteps and her totem animals.

The size of this shawl was cut to seventy (70) inches and shortened to thirty-six (36) inches not including the length of the fringe. A standard size I've seen is 60-68 inches by 60 inches.

Gathering of the materials:

While on many trips to the fabric store during their sales days, my friend found the material that would make up this beautiful shawl. She had walked by this bright pink fabric numerous times only to stand in front of it near the end of her shopping time to find her friend's spirit urging her to buy this one. She also bought ribbon in 4 colors (one that was the same pink) for a total of eighty-five (85) meters. The ribbon was cut to twenty-five (25) centimeter lengths. My friend had purchased in Tucson, Arizona, another ribbon in a pattern from the Natives there. Next she found gold, white and a beautiful purple fabric for the applique pieces.

The layout:

My friend spent time with pen and paper to map out all the pieces going on the shawl. This was the final design.

The applique pieces:

The center piece comprised of four (4) arrow bands cut out of white and purple and 4 feathers cut out of white material and gold felt. This piece matches the pattern of beadwork on her regalia.

The bottom left applique of purple and white material with gold embroidered paw prints of her friend's pets.

The bottom right applique was cut out of the gold felt in a goblet shape and white material for the wings which were embroidered to accentuate the feathers. One extra feather was cut out to be placed falling from the wings.

Strips of purple satin bordered the whole shawl.

The sewing:

First up was sewing the purple border onto the pink shawl.

Next I glued the ribbon pieces onto the ribbon band and then sewed that onto three (3) of the four edges of the shawl. Each of the ribbon pieces were side by side with no gaps between like you do for the chainette fringe cording.

NOTE: If you are going to do the fringe properly you cut the cord in 14 inch lengths and attach it to the shawl by punching holes along the edge of the shawl a finger-width apart. You attach each fringe length by folding it in half and pinching a loop to push through the hole. You then pull the dangling strings through that loop and tighten the knot at the shawl edge. You can knot one, two or more in one hole to give the lengths of cord a fuller fringe.

Since the main fabrics were satin I used hot glue to attach pieces and fabric glue for the edges so it wouldn't fray. The completed applique emblems were then sewn onto the shawl.

The photo above is the finished shawl. It took two days to make since there needed to be a second infusion of ribbon to finish the sides. Even after that run, there was only enough to do two-thirds along the sides.

Each and every shawl is unique to the spirit guide/person it is intended to represent during the dances at the powwow. This spirit is happy that that spirit had a wonderful ceremonial dance to send her on her next journey.

Mína ka wapamitin
(I will see you again)

AnimatedLadyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12963067911593988068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6949782048748868878.post-37850024384855640812012-10-09T08:08:00.002-04:002023-08-24T10:46:38.156-04:00Down sickJust getting over a sinus cold... definitely wiped me out that I stayed in bed all day yesterday watching TV and movies.

Onto today where my head is finally allowing me to get back to my painting. I think I'll go get another set of brushes since my last set I bought seems to be 'molting' LOL. Not fun having strands of brush on the canvas surface... can't remember how many times I've had to hunt for my tweezers to pick them off...

So, paint! Read! Quiet with the occasional squawk from a crow for today!AnimatedLadyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12963067911593988068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6949782048748868878.post-63588798832427126572012-09-26T08:15:00.001-04:002023-08-24T10:46:03.894-04:00Ahhhhhhhhh Fall! The time of year where the leaves change color and make a wonderful blanket on the ground on all the paths I walk!

A good portion of the summer has been mostly viewed through my camera lens and LCD screen. It ended up that most of the time I would use my little digital camera because I couldn't afford the film for my other camera. I really prefer my SLR film camera though... Many reasons come to mind. Mainly, whenever I want to focus on a scene my digital camera is set for the center spot in the composition, but when I change it to use the Auto setting it picks the spot! Most annoying!!!!!

I can't wait to have enough to buy a really nice professional digital SLR camera... can't wait...

Anyways, I've been slowly working on the two watercolors I had posted images of earlier. I'll get around to taking pictures of them soon...

I finally put brush to canvas recently on my first large oil painting in years! I am so excited. It's been a summer of taking pictures to compose the image for this painting and I'm just beside myself somedays!

Ok, off for yet another of my walks and then back to work on paintings!

Have a great day, rain or shine!AnimatedLadyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12963067911593988068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6949782048748868878.post-79687174033569216702012-07-30T08:04:00.000-04:002012-09-26T08:06:55.693-04:00Middle of Summer!
The summer has been hot and the house (not my room) has been ice cold! Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr I spent most of the time taking photos for creations that are in the works in various forms...

Some of the days I would find a nice shady spot outside to sketch and dream.

Can't wait for September with TIFF hits Toronto. I'm visiting friends and hoping to get to see some stars and attend a movie or two!

Happy travelling everyone, wherever you may go. Stay safe!AnimatedLadyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12963067911593988068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6949782048748868878.post-84474854199361841182012-02-21T12:11:00.000-05:002012-02-21T12:11:43.028-05:00What's your hot beverage while creating?I sit here staring at my cup of Earl Grey tea while pondering my next chapter in a book I am writing. I have so many projects on the go that I celebrate extensively when I complete one.

So, I put to you -- What is your hot beverage of choice when creating that fine piece of work? -- a question that always comes up in my mind when I choose a particular drink for each different project.

The Earl Grey aroma evokes a dreamy quality in some of my paintings so much that I change back to Orange Pekoe a lot for the caffeine.

Well, off to create, go for a walk, and more creating when I return!

Happy day to all!AnimatedLadyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12963067911593988068noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6949782048748868878.post-55658210015347377032012-02-09T08:50:00.000-05:002012-02-09T08:50:34.794-05:00The question of copyright....I have been online a long time now and there have been so many times where I did not post my art because I was afraid of it being stolen and used by someone else as their own work.

I, just recently, read a blog that this issue is getting more attention lately. Have a look!

So, while I post all my pictures with my logo all over it, I will try to do so with how much of the image I will leave for your viewing pleasure. I am still debating which of those licences I would like to use.

Ok! Back to the easel, page and computer!AnimatedLadyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12963067911593988068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6949782048748868878.post-68010660962393506242012-02-06T12:33:00.000-05:002012-02-06T12:33:56.746-05:00Stages in a drawingI used oil pastel for this one and here's the result. Take note that this was done with just a 12 pack of the basic Selectum pastel brand. 12 colors...
I even know how to make my own brushes and have done so when I couldn't buy any new ones.

As the world expands in the many implements used to paint, I find myself always delving into fine point brushes, pens and markers for the more defined look of my painting.

Now, back to my painting and writing... See you on the 'morrow!!!!AnimatedLadyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12963067911593988068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6949782048748868878.post-30054098732462168512012-02-03T16:08:00.001-05:002023-08-19T23:44:06.417-04:00Starting watercoloursSo, today I am posting the start of a watercolour that was slated to be my holiday card to send out last year, but with all the visitors and life situations made it slide to the back burner for a bit.

There will be a bit of pine leaves as well as berries, but for the most part the robin is the highlight of this painting. I am trying a mix of my powder watercolor paints with those tubes of watercolor paint.

Here's hoping for more sunshine to light up my room!AnimatedLadyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12963067911593988068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6949782048748868878.post-1193561975596900122012-02-02T08:32:00.000-05:002012-02-02T08:32:20.559-05:00Composing, writing and then painting!Ok, here goes my biographical statement:

From Painting to Sewing to Photography, Traveling and Writing projects, Valerie Blondeau, a life-long learner, presents her art through her website and exhibitions to come. Born in Canada she picked up a crayon at a very early age to scribble on paper, the wall and the back of her dresser. She’s the daughter of parents who let their children expand in whatever they wanted to learn. From a father who is a Jack of all Trades she learned how to fix her own bicycle and later her own car. From her mother she acquired her bookworm degree reading everything that interested her in her local library, sewing costumes for theatre and dance and cooking up a storm in the kitchen. While living with her family she traveled coast to coast across Canada and admired her country through the lens of her father's Pentax and an old Brownie Hawkeye.

As her life played out Valerie could pick up any skill and follow it through until the next skill presented itself. Part of her life was spent in the family business of photo processing where black & white and living color emerged. Dabbling into animation through books her father showed her, Valerie wowed her classmates in high school with posters she drew for them. She accumulated a following of friends who constantly ask for drawings of unicorns, some animation projects and various other interesting art projects.

Experimenting in art style, enter the varied courses of Art from Algonquin College and a couple of local schools. Valerie expanded her education and continues to take the occasional course to add to her repertoire. With her cameras Valerie continues her art by capturing images that will later become paintings or preserving an image for a work in progress. An example of this is the current photo posted for viewing. Valerie had started that painting on a cold rainy day and had taken a photo just in case the weather turned really bad, which it did. She now continues that painting with all her other projects on the go.

She is currently learning Spanish and Japanese in preparation for her upcoming travels.

-------------------
Here stems my artist statement:

I enjoy painting in all mediums. I am drawn into my painting as the subject emerges from the brush
strokes on the blank canvas. My photography compliments my art medium by preserving an image to paint or stand on its own through my website and photography contracts I am hired for.

Currently, when I am working with watercolor, the paper has a lot to do with the lighting in the work. With oils I find the subject matter brings forth the question of whether or not to use my pallet knife in the project. Acrylics has been the one for me finding the right gloss gel to keep the paint from drying out too fast.

My painting of the female Mallard duck paddling away from me gives me a sense of peace and exploration. A softness yet vibrancy to the greys adds the wave texture to the water. Little streaks of blue from the sky before the clouds thoroughly blocked it out to rain on me. I am at peace and enjoy nature and the world through my art and photography.

-----------------------------

And that's it for today, now onto painting!
AnimatedLadyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12963067911593988068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6949782048748868878.post-43608126868791978602012-02-01T14:37:00.000-05:002012-02-01T14:37:48.921-05:00Welcome to my world!Well, here's hoping I can keep this up with my busy lifestyle in art and the arts!

I am hoping to come up with the best artist statement for my next exhibition of my art and photography. For now you can find most of my stuff on my website http://www.animatedlady.com and I hope to post what's newest to be shown on my website.

There are so many flash programs for displaying art that it gets hard to choose what to use with my website. Over time I will be revamping my website again.

So, on with the show!
